Coming 2/7: Evgeny Kissin & James Levine - Schubert
A KEYBOARD ‘DREAM TEAM’
EVGENY KISSIN & JAMES LEVINE
PERFORM SCHUBERT’S FOUR-HAND PIANO MUSIC
IN LIVE CARNEGIE HALL RECITAL RECORDING
FOR RCA RED SEAL
CD IN STORES TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2006
On the night of May 1, 2005, pianists Evgeny Kissin and James Levine joined forces in a critically acclaimed concert of Franz Schubert’s piano music for four hands, captured in its entirety on RCA Red Seal’s live recording of the unforgettable, sold-out event. The specially priced two-disc recording will be released on Tuesday, February 7, 2006.
The release of this unique Schubert recital comes in the wake of Kissin’s nomination in the 48th annual Grammy Awards for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (without Orchestra) for his 2005 RCA Red Seal recording of solo piano works of Scriabin, Medtner and Stravinsky.
The Schubert program includes the composer’s Fantasia in F Minor for Piano Four Hands, D940; Allegro in A Minor for Piano Four Hands, D947 (“Lebensstürme”); and Sonata in C for Piano Four Hands, D812 (“Grand Duo”), as well as two encores by the composer – Characteristic March in C, D968b, and Military March No. 1 in D, D733.
Frequent collaborators in the past as conductor and pianist, Levine and Kissin played this program in Boston’s Symphony Hall four days before the New York concert, an evening that also happened to mark the conclusion of Levine’s first season as Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Reviewing that performance, the Boston Globe noted how rich the contrasts were in the styles of Kissin (“dynamic and impulsive”) and Levine (“reserved and fluid”), adding, “though they may make for an odd couple on paper, in the concert hall they each played with such sensitivity and care that they seemed like the most natural pairing in the world.” The Boston Herald concurred – “a dazzling recital it was … it sometimes seemed as if there were indeed an orchestra onstage, so brilliantly rich and colorful was the sound these two produced.”
Four days later in New York, the New York Sun noted that “Carnegie Hall’s audience showered this pair with bravos and demands for encores.” Noting that this intimate four-hand piano music risked being overwhelmed in the space of Carnegie Hall, The New York Times noted this approach to “Schubert played by such fine players was about the best anyone could do.”
Evgeny Kissin is perhaps the most acclaimed interpreter of the Romantic repertoire of his generation, hailed by London’s Independent as “the greatest pianist of his generation, if not several others besides.” He has recorded extensively for the RCA Red Seal and Sony Classical labels – both now a part of Sony BMG Masterworks – and his catalogue for the label includes an acclaimed recording of the Beethoven Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 5 with James Levine conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. Like the Russian disc, Kissin’s 2003 all-Brahms disc was also a Grammy nominee.
Slated for released on RCA Red Seal later in 2006 is an all-new Chopin recital from Evgeny Kissin.
